INTERVIEW AVEC BLACK SHADOW

Pour un "old timer" comme moi, il est vivifiant de voir bourgeonner de nouvelles pousses dans l'univers Black Metal. Black Shadow Legions est un jeune label français férocement implanté dans l'underground, avec des productions de grande qualité. C'est pourquoi j'ai voulu donner la parole à Black Shadow, activiste convaincu et porteur de la flamme noire. Bonjour Black Shadow, merci de répondre à mes questions. Tout d'abord peux tu nous raconter comment t'es venue l'idée de créer un label underground, et comment tu t'y es pris ?

Salutations ! Alors cela faisait quelques années que j'écoutais essentiellement du black metal et étais plongé dans l'underground, d'abord comme auditeur. En 2016, j'ai fondé mon premier one-man band, avant de créer 2 ans plus tard un site web au nom de “Black Shadow Legions”, afin d'en faire une interface sur laquelle je pourrai distribuer les CDs, K7, merchandising, etc... de mes différents projets. Et étant donné que je n'aime pas trop bandcamp, les réseaux sociaux, ainsi que la musique dématérialisée, j'ai pris la seule option qui s'offrait à moi, et qui me permettait d'être le moins dépendant possible.

Pendant la même période, j'avais en tête l'idée de créer un label dans les années à venir, tout d'abord par passion pour tout ce qui est support physique, mais aussi car je voulais apporter ma patte à l'underground. Puis également produire les jeunes groupes, et pouvoir devenir en quelque sorte un “tremplin” et un appui pour ces derniers. Bref, durant l'été 2018, j'ai pu enfin autoproduire la démo de mon premier one-man band, à partir de là j'ai vu que j'étais en mesure de lancer un label. Donc j'ai fondé mon label en janvier 2019, avec un planning assez chargé, qui fait que j'en suis là aujourd'hui.

Tu fais de la production, avec des nouveautés et des rééditions. Un catalogue dans lequel on peut compter Furfur, Malementé, Ad Vitam Ad Mortem, Gévaudan ou Windhelm. Comment sélectionnes tu les artistes que tu vas produire et ensuite quel est le processus ?

Je n'ai pas vraiment de critères de sélection en particulier, si ce n'est que je sélectionne les groupes dont j'apprécie le travail et qui sont en adéquation avec la philosophie et l'idéologie du label.

La rencontre s'est faite différemment selon les groupes : pour Furfur, on avait déjà prévu de produire un de ses albums bien avant la création du label. J'ai connu Malementé par le biais d'un ami, je l'ai donc contacté car j'appréciai son travail et lui ai proposé de le produire. Ensuite , pour Ad Vitam Ad Mortem, il s'agit de mon second one-man band. Puis après, le label “Les Créations Underground”, avec lequel j'étais en contact depuis un moment, m'a proposé de coproduire avec lui Gévaudan, que j'ai volontiers accepté ! Enfin, Aldric, la personne derrière Windhelm, m'a contacté pour rééditer son dernier album. Je connaissais déjà son travail dans son autre groupe Kaldt Helvete, et Windhelm a été pour moi une très bonne découverte.

Et concernant les démarches, rien de spécial, je discute avec le groupe de son projet, puis on essaie de trouver ensemble un accord pour le support, la quantité, le packaging, le prix, etc... de son CD. Puis je m'occupe du reste, et parfois je me charge du design du livret et de la jaquette. Une fois que j'ai reçu les CDs de l'usine, j’envoie une partie des CDs au groupe, puis je me charge de la promo avant et après la sortie officielle.

Tu fais aussi de la distribution, avec Black Holocaust, Obsèques, le fanzine Acid Vicious. Là aussi, quels sont tes critères pour distribuer un groupe ou un fanzine ?

Là aussi c'est pareil que pour la production, il faut que ce soit un minimum en accord avec la vision de mon label.

Jusqu'ici, je n'avais pas encore beaucoup développé cette parti “distro”, mais depuis quelques mois je suis en train d'acquérir du nouveau matériel !

Pour l'instant je distribue mes démos sorties avant la création du label, ainsi que toutes les sorties de mes projets sur d'autres labels. Mais les labels “Les Créations Underground” et “Non Posse Mori” m'ont aussi proposé de distribuer quelques uns de leurs CDs. Et pour finir, j'avais contacté Acid Vicious pour distribuer quelques uns de ses fanzines, car Windhelm a été interviewé dedans. Depuis, un partenariat est né avec ces labels et ce fanzine. D'autant plus que j'apprécie ces initiatives, il faut être sacrément être courageux pour se lancer là-dedans ! Bon, tu vas certainement me dire que c'est la même chose pour mon label ahah !

Tu appartiens à une nouvelle génération d'activistes du BM français. Penses tu qu'il y a actuellement un renouveau avec ton label, les créations underground et autres labels et artistes de la génération des “millennials” ?

En effet, j'appartiens à une jeune générations d'activistes dans l'underground français. Un renouveau ? Oui, dans le sens où je pense à une continuité, un recyclage de la scène black metal française, comme toujours. Après, il y a aussi un certaine “renaissance”, par-exemple avec la réapparition du fanzine Acid Vicious en juillet 2019, dont le numéro précédent a été publié en 1999.

Par-contre, il y a une petite scène qui est en train d'être créée, avec de nombreux jeunes groupes, labels, fanzines, et activistes. Les Créations Underground en font parti, tout comme les labels Hypogea Invictus, Share Your Pain, etc... ainsi que mon label.

Tous les groupes que j'ai produis pour l'instant, sont plus ou moins proches de cette “scène”, certains évoluant entre les différents labels que j'ai cité ci-dessus. Et tout cela s'est fait naturellement.

Prochaines signatures en vue ? Prochaines sorties ?

Le mois dernier, j'avais sorti la première démo du projet folk/ambiant Temple, la première production hors black metal du label, bien que Temple soit issu du collectif “Le Rêve de Molasar”.

Ensuite, pour novembre, je sortirai la troisième démo de mon projet Black Holocaust, qui comportera les pistes issues du split avorté Furfur/Black Holocaust, initialement prévu pour début 2019...

Ce seront les dernières productions pour cette année. Je reprendrai l'année prochaine, mais avec un rythme beaucoup moins soutenu, car j'ai entre-autre de nombreux projets de prévus, et que j'aimerai que mon label continue de rester pour moi un passion, et non une corvée.

Si tu devais définir l’ADN de ton label ?

L'ADN de mon label est en réalité lié à moi-même, et inversement. L'objectif, comme dit précédemment, est de soutenir tout groupe œuvrant dans le black metal, de préférence underground (car je n'ai ni les moyens ni le temps de produire un gros groupe), mais aussi d'autres styles de musiques plus ou moins liés au black metal, comme l'ambiant, le dungeon synth, la folk, et bien d'autres ! Et surtout promouvoir la scène underground française !

Mais aussi de lutter contre la normalisation du digital. Car malheureusement, nombreux sont les groupes prometteurs utilisant le format digital, faute d'avoir un label qui puisse les produire.

Black Shadow Legions... le nom renvoie à la fois à l'inner circle et aux légions noires...Quelle est l'influence de ces scènes des années 90 sur ton travail ?

C'est vrai que j'ai été pas mal influencé par Les Légions Noires, directement, et aussi un peu par la scène norvégienne, plutôt indirectement. Ces deux scènes m'ont certes un peu influencé, dans le sens où je cherche et espère pouvoir participer à la création d'un petit cercle d'activistes ainsi qu'à un renouveau de la scène black française. Et comme je l'ai dit précédemment, ça m'a l'air plutôt bien parti.

Après, dans mes choix au niveau des groupes que je produis, ce qui s'est passé avant ne m'intéresse pas. Ce qui m'intéresse, c'est ce qu'il se fait actuellement, ce que le groupe fait, car je produis essentiellement des nouveautés. 

Aussi le côté underground et confidentiel des ces cercles m'a également influencé, même si aujourd'hui quasiment tout le monde est sur les « réseaux sociaux », et que je vis malheureusement avec mon époque, aussi décadente soit-elle. Dans le monde dans lequel nous vivons aujourd'hui, je pense qu'il est impossible de retrouver cet underground de l'époque, même si à notre petite échelle on essaie de s'en rapprocher le plus.

Tu es toi-même musicien, avec ton projet Black Holocaust notamment, peux tu nous en parler ?

Effectivement, en plus de produire des groupes, je suis également musicien au sein de mon projet solo Black Holocaust, que j'ai lancé début 2016. Avec deux démos pour l'instant, la troisième étant prévue pour novembre sur mon label. Je tiens également Ad Vitam Ad Mortem, mon second one-man band, avec une démo sortie en autoproduction, ainsi qu'un album publié fin juin sur mon label. A part cela, quoi dire... Black Holocaust est mon idéologie et ma vision sur notre société/civilisation actuelle, tandis que Ad Vitam Ad Mortem est à caractère beaucoup plus personnel.

Si tu devais citer tes 20 albums préférés ?

Bon, le choix a été très compliqué, je n'aime pas faire ce genre de classement. Du coup, il y a forcément de nombreux albums que j'ai dû oublier dans ma liste...

That is why I wanted to give the floor to Black Shadow, a convinced activist and carrier of the black flame. Hello Black Shadow, thank you for answering my questions. First of all, can you tell us how you came up with the idea of creating an underground label, and how you did it?

Greetings! So I had been listening mainly to black metal for a few years and was immersed in the underground, first as a listener. In 2016, I founded my first one-man band, before creating 2 years later a website in the name of "Black Shadow Legions", in order to make it an interface on which I could distribute the CDs, K7, merchandising, etc.... of my various projects. And since I don't like bandcamp, social networks, as well as dematerialized music, I took the only option available to me, and that allowed me to be as less dependent as possible.

During the same period, I had in mind the idea of creating a label in the coming years, first of all out of passion for everything that is physical support, but also because I wanted to bring my paw to the underground. Then also to produce the young groups, and to be able to become a kind of "springboard" and support for them. In short, during the summer of 2018, I was finally able to self-produce the demo of my first one-man band, from there I saw that I was able to launch a label. So I founded my label in January 2019, with a rather busy schedule, which means that I am here today.

You're marking production, with new products and re-releases. A catalogue in which we can count Furfur, Malementé, Ad Vitam Ad Mortem, Gévaudan or Windhelm. How do you select the artists you will produce and then what is the process?

I don't really have any selection criteria in particular, except that I select the bands whose work I appreciate and which are in line with the philosophy and ideology of the label.

The meeting went differently according to the bands: for Furfur, we had already planned to produce one of his albums long before the label was created. I met Malementé through a friend, so I contacted him because I appreciated his work and offered to produce it. Then, for Ad Vitam Ad Mortem, it is my second one-man band. Then, the label "Les Créations Underground", with which I had been in contact for a while, offered me to co-produce with him Gévaudan, which I gladly accepted! Finally, Aldric, the person behind Windhelm, contacted me to re-release his latest album. I already knew his work in his other band Kaldt Helvete, and Windhelm was a very good discovery for me.

And concerning the steps, nothing special, I discuss with the group his project, then we try to find together an agreement for the support, the quantity, the packaging, the price, etc.... of his CD. Then I take care of the rest, and sometimes I take care of the design of the booklet and the jacket. Once I have received the CDs from the factory, I send some of the CDs to the band, then I take care of the promotion before and after the official release.

You also do distribution, with Black Holocaust, Funeral, Acid Vicious fanzine. Again, what are your criteria for distributing a band or fanzine?

Here again it's the same as for production, it has to be a minimum in accordance with the vision of my label.

Until now, I hadn't developed much this "distro" part yet, but in the last few months I've been acquiring new equipment!

For the moment I distribute my demos released before the creation of the label, as well as all the releases of my projects on other labels. But the labels "Les Créations Underground" and "Non Posse Mori" also offered me to distribute some of their CDs. And finally, I contacted Acid Vicious to distribute some of his fanzines, because Windhelm was interviewed in them. Since then, a partnership has been created with these labels and this fanzine. Especially since I appreciate these initiatives, it takes a lot of courage to get into this! Well, you're certainly going to tell me that it's the same for my label ahah!

You belong to a new generation of French BM activists. Do you think there is currently a renewal with your label, underground creations and other labels and artists of the "millennials" generation?

Indeed, I belong to a young generation of activists in the French underground. A renewal? Yes, in the sense that I think of a continuity, a recycling of the French black metal scene, as always. Then there is also a certain "renaissance", for example with the reappearance of the Acid Vicious fanzine in July 2019, the previous issue of which was published in 1999. On the other hand, there is a small scene being created, with many young bands, labels, fanzines, and activists. The Underground Creations are part of it, as are the Hypogea Invictus, Share Your Pain, etc... as well as my label.

All the bands I've produced so far are more or less close to this "scene", some of them evolving between the different labels I mentioned above. And all this happened naturally.

Upcoming signatures in sight? Next releases?

Last month, I released the first demo of the folk/ambient project Temple, the first production outside black metal of the label, although Temple is from the collective "Le Rêve de Molasar".

Then, for November, I will release the third demo of my Black Holocaust project, which will include tracks from the aborted Furfur/Black Holocaust split, initially scheduled for early 2019....

These will be the last productions for this year. I will resume next year, but at a much slower pace, because I have many projects planned, and I would like my label to continue to be a passion for me, not a chore.

If you had to define the DNA of your label?

The DNA of my label is actually linked to me, and vice versa. The objective, as mentioned above, is to support any band working in black metal, preferably underground (because I have neither the means nor the time to produce a big band), but also other styles of music more or less related to black metal, such as ambient, synth dungeon, folk, and many others! And above all, promote the French underground scene!

But also to fight against the standardization of digital technology. Unfortunately, many promising bands use the digital format because they do not have a label that can produce them.

Black Shadow Legions... the name refers to both the inner circle and the black legions... What is the influence of these scenes from the 90s on your work?

 It's true that I was quite influenced by The Black Legions, directly, and also a little bit by the Norwegian scene, rather indirectly. These two scenes have certainly influenced me a little, in the sense that I am looking for and hope to be able to participate in the creation of a small circle of activists as well as a renewal of the French black scene. And as I said before, it looks pretty good to me.

Then, in my choices about the groups I produce, I am not interested in what happened before. What interests me is what is currently being done, what the group is doing, because I essentially produce new products. 

Also the underground and confidential side of these circles has also influenced me, even if today almost everyone is on "social networks", and that I unfortunately live in my time, however decadent it may be. In the world we live in today, I think it is impossible to find this underground of the time, even if on our small scale we try to get as close as possible to it.

You are a musician yourself, with your Black Holocaust project in particular, can you tell us about it?

Indeed, in addition to producing bands, I am also a musician in my solo project Black Holocaust, which I launched in early 2016. With two demos for the moment, the third one being planned for November on my label. I also have Ad Vitam Ad Mortem, my second one-man band, with a demo released in self-production, as well as an album released at the end of June on my label. Apart from that, what else can I say.... Black Holocaust is my ideology and vision on our current society-civilization, while Ad Vitam Ad Mortem is much more personal.

If you had to name your 20 favorite albums?

Well, the choice was very complicated, I don't like to do that kind of ranking. As a result, there are necessarily many albums that I had to forget in my list...

I don't know about that at all, and I don't really care, considering the number of bands I'd like to produce. But to really answer your question, there are necessarily the bands I mentioned above that I would like to see on my label one day!
