Erased Memory est une des belles découvertes récentes du Scribe. Romain, chanteur et guitariste a bord du combo nous parle de son histoire, intrinsèquement liée aux thématiques développées sur ce premier album. Teinté de Death, Black, Thrash avec des touches indus que ne renierait pas le grand Strapping Young Lad, ce disque étonnant aura bientôt un petit frère beaucoup plus Dark que Romain évoque pour nous...

Bonjour Romain et bienvenue dans le Scribe ! Première question, peux tu nous parler de toi ? Avant Erased Memory avais tu participé a d'autres projets ?
Bonjour Pierre et merci pour l’intérêt que tu portes à mon projet . Je me présente, Romain, je suis guitariste/chanteur et l’unique membre du projet Erased Memory basé sur Angers .
J’ai commencé la musique relativement tard , vers 17/18 ans . A l’époque j’ai joué dans diverses formations sur Nantes , comme chanteur dans un premier temps puis chanteur/guitariste dans la scène black metal.
Erased Memory, ton projet solo, avec lequel tu fais du Death Mélodique...comment ce projet est-il né ?
C’était en 2015, une rencontre avec un guitariste qui partageais la même vision de la musique que moi m’a donné envie de monter ce projet . Nous ne voulions pas nous enfermer dans un style alors nous avons commencé à mélanger toute nos influences , le but étant de créer une musique riche et variée . Et puis pour des raisons personnelles nous avons arrêté notre collaboration et le projet a pris une tournure différente . J’ai donc pris la décision de faire les choses seul , car je savais vers quoi aller musicalement et thématiquement parlant . Créer une musique riche , épique en y mêlant sons classiques , choeurs , ensembles d’orchestre et samples avec mes influences death , thrash et black metal, le tout pour créer un mur sonore à la fois mélodique et grandiloquent .
Tes influences a la base ?
Elles sont multiples : Au delà du metal et du classique il y a aussi les expériences cinématographiques , je pense notamment à des films comme Equilibrium, Bienvenue à Gattaca , Matrix, Blade Runner et surtout Interstellar pour leurs thématiques et musiques qui forment un terreau fertile à mon inspiration. J’ajouterai un peu de littérature.
Il y a beaucoup de genres musicaux qui se bousculent dans ton album éponyme...Du Death, du Black, du Thrash, de l'indus, des choses plus grandioses aussi...j'ai parfois pensé à Devin Townsend sur certains passages...Comment réunis tu toutes ces musiques et comment les utilises tu ?
Oui, Devin et particulièrement avec Strapping Young Lad, m’influence énormément. C’est simple tout ce que j’aime en musique je l’ai retrouvé chez Strapping mais mes premières influences ont toujours été des groupes comme Emperor , Morbid Angel , Dimmu Borgir , Keep of Kalessin , ou encore Limbonic Art et Ulver mais aussi des compositeurs comme Hans Zimmer , John Williams ,Richard Wagner et Modest Moussorgski et son œuvre légendaire Night on the Bald Mountain.
La musique est comme une thérapie pour moi . Elle m’aide à évacuer toute les douleurs , frustrations et peines qui s’accumulent au fil du temps . Elle me permet une certaine résilience et acceptation de ce que je suis , ce que je fut et me soutient dans ce que je tend à être .
Il y’a un état second lorsque je compose ou j’ai l’impression d’être hors de mon corps, hors du temps, c’est très transcendental . L’énergie créatrice vient, j’essaie autant que possible de la saisir puis je travaille toute les idées qu’elle m’inspire afin d’avoir un tout cohérent. Une chose est certaine, je ne veux pas m’enfermer dans un genre musical particulier .
Comme je le disais, Devin Townsend, mais aussi Fear Factory, sont des noms qui viennent à l'esprit en t'écoutant...ça te parait juste ?
Comme je l’ai dit, Devin est ma plus grosse influence . Lorsque j’ai écouté City pour la première fois j’ai eu un déclic, je venais de découvrir ce que j’ai toujours cherché en musique . La violence , la rage , le mur sonore avec une grande musicalité et un son unique donc c’est tout à fait juste. Fear Factory n’est pas un groupe que j’écoute particulièrement donc je ne saurais le dire.
L'album est sorti en 2017, nous prépares tu quelque chose ?
Actuellement oui je commence l'écriture du second album.
Au niveau des concepts et des thèmes tout ça m'a l'air plutôt profond ! Peux tu nous en parler un peu ?
Il s’agit d’une introspection. J’ai utilisé des événements de mon enfance/adolescence principalement, que j’ai romancés. L’album est une histoire, l’ordre des pistes n’est pas aléatoire, elles décrivent le cheminement et le passage de l’enfance à l’âge adulte.
Il y’a beaucoup de mélancolie, parfois une certaine nostalgie de cette période ou tout te paraissait beau et facile, l’insouciance, jusqu’à ce que tu réalises la cruauté et la difficulté du monde. Et tu réalises que depuis ton enfance toute ta vie est programmée pour que tu deviennes un gentil pion d’un système déshumanisé et auto-destructeur. Mais chaque texte renferme une part d’optimisme car le protagoniste de mon histoire est conscient que le monde dans lequel il évolue est une mascarade et une immense pièce de théâtre mais au lieu de s’apitoyer sur son sort et de se dire que tout est vain, il en tire force et courage pour l’affronter.
Que symbolise la pochette de l'album ?
Elle représente l’homme moderne. Plus aucune conscience du monde qui l’entoure, replié sur lui même et manipulé par les médias mainstream et un système de pensée formatée, afin que son “temps de cerveau disponible” alimente ceux qui tirent les ficelles.
Comme je parle beaucoup de thèmes liés à l’enfance, l’idée d’une pochette dessinée de manière un peu enfantine m’a paru juste.
Quelle vision as tu de la scène death mélodique en 2020 ?
Pour être honnête, le death mélo n’est pas vraiment le style que j’écoute le plus, c’est d’ailleurs amusant que ma musique soit classée dedans. Je n’ai pas de vision à proprement parler , ce serait un peu prétentieux de ma part.

2020 va être une année très chargée pour moi. J’écris un nouvel album et je vais lui donner une dimension plus épique et extrême que le premier. Il sera plus sombre également . Je compte cette fois m’éloigner des thèmes personnels pour créer une histoire inspirée de l’œuvre 1984 de George Orwell, en la reliant à notre monde actuel où les textes s’opposeront les uns les autres entre la vision de l’opprimé et de l’oppresseur, avec un visuel inspiré des grandes dictatures, et d’univers SF comme les films cités plus haut.
En parallèle je souhaite donner le plus de concerts possible à travers la France. Actuellement je suis en recherche de dates.

Hello Romain and welcome to the Scribe! First question, can you tell us about yourself? Before Erased Memory had you participated in other projects?
Hello Pierre and thank you for your interest in my project. Let me introduce myself, Romain, I'm a guitarist/singer and the only member of the Erased Memory project based in Angers.
I started music relatively late, around 17/18 years old. At that time I played in various bands in Nantes, first as a singer and then as a singer/guitarist in the black metal scene.
Erased Memory, your solo project, with which you do Melodic Death...how was this project born ?
It was in 2015, a meeting with a guitarist who shared the same vision of music as me made me want to create this project. We didn't want to lock ourselves in one style so we started to mix all our influences, the goal being to create a rich and varied music. And then for personal reasons we stopped our collaboration and the project took a different turn. So I took the decision to do things on my own, because I knew where to go musically and thematically speaking. To create a rich, epic music by mixing classical sounds, choirs, orchestral ensembles and samples with my influences of death, thrash and black metal, all to create a wall of sound that is both melodic and grandiloquent.
What are your basic influences ?
Beyond metal and classical music, there are also cinematic experiences, I'm thinking of films like Equilibrium, Welcome to Gattaca, Matrix, Blade Runner and above all Interstellar for their themes and music that form a fertile ground for my inspiration. I will add a little bit of literature.
There are a lot of musical genres in your eponymous album...Death, Thrash, Black, industrial, more grandiose things too...I sometimes thought of Devin Townsend on some passages...How do you gather all these musics and how do you use them ?
Yes, Devin and, notably with Strapping Young Lad, influences me enormously. It's simple, everything I like in music I found in Strapping but my first influences have always been bands like Emperor , Morbid Angel , Dimmu Borgir , Keep of Kalessin , or Limbonic Art and Ulver but also composers like Hans Zimmer , John Williams , Richard Wagner and Modest Mussorgski and his legendary work Night on the Bald Mountain.
Music is like therapy for me. It helps me to get rid of all the pain, frustration and sorrow that accumulates over time. It allows me a certain resilience and acceptance of who I am, what I was and supports me in what I tend to be.
There is a second state when I compose or I feel like I'm out of my body, out of time, it's very transcendental. The creative energy comes, I try as much as possible to seize it and then I work on all the ideas it inspires me in order to have a coherent whole. One thing is certain, I don't want to lock myself up in a particular musical genre.
As I was saying, Devin Townsend, but also Fear Factory, are names that come to mind while listening to you...does it sound right to you?
As I said, Devin is my biggest influence. When I first listened to City for the first time I had a click, I had just discovered what I had always been looking for in music. The violence, the rage, the wall of sound with a great musicality and a unique sound so it's absolutely right. Fear Factory is not a band that I particularly listen to so I can't say.
The album was released in 2017, are you preparing something for us ?
At the moment yes, I'm starting to write the second album.
In terms of concepts and themes, it all sounds pretty deep to me! Can you tell us a little bit about it?
It's about introspection. I used events from my childhood/adolescence mainly, which I romanticized. The album is a story, the order of the tracks is not random, they describe the path and the passage from childhood to adulthood.
There's a lot of melancholy, sometimes a certain nostalgia for that period when everything seemed beautiful and easy to you, carefree, until you realize the cruelty and difficulty of the world. And you realize that since your childhood your whole life is programmed for you to become a nice pawn in a dehumanized and self-destructive system. But each text contains a part of optimism because the protagonist of my story is aware that the world in which he evolves is a masquerade and a huge play, but instead of feeling sorry for himself and saying that everything is in vain, he draws strength and courage to face it.
What does the album cover symbolize?
It represents modern man. No longer conscious of the world around him, folded in on himself and manipulated by mainstream media and a formatted thought system, so that his "available brain time" feeds those pulling the strings.
Since I talk a lot about childhood themes, the idea of a cover drawn in a slightly childish way seemed to me to be right.
What is your vision of the melodic death scene in 2020 ?
To be honest, melodic death is not really the style I listen to the most, it's funny that my music is classified in it. I don't have a vision as such, it would be a bit pretentious on my part.

2020 is going to be a very busy year for me. I'm writing a new album and I'm going to give it a more epic and extreme dimension than the first one. It will be darker as well. This time, I intend to move away from the personal theme to create a story inspired by George Orwell's 1984 work by linking it to our current world where the lyrics will oppose each other between the vision of the oppressed and the oppressor, with a visual inspired by the great dictatorships, and SF universes like the movies mentioned above.
At the same time I wish to give as many concerts as possible throughout France. Currently I'm looking for dates.
