Les polonais de Cursed Coven, que j'avais pour ma part découverts en 2018 lors de la sortie de l'excellent split Insatiabilis Tenebrarum Sitis au sein duquel ils partageaient l'affiche avec Darkstorm, Goatkolonne, Stormfront et Ordo Sanguinis Noctis, nous en reviennent avec ce premier long-format : Execranda Gentilitas Ibi Veneraretur...
Bien ancré dans l'underground, notre gang de l'est nous gratifie d'un album de Doom Metal porté sur l'occultisme et assez typique de la scène de l'Est, avec cette touche presque Rock qui les caractérise.
Le couvent maudit et son charme slave (les textes en polonais déclamés de façons solennelle) nous donne huit titres lourds et obscurs, avec une touche Black Metal subtile et distillée à des moments clés. C'est bien néanmoins dans le Doom que le groupe évolue, et un Doom qui n'a que peu de lien avec le Stoner ou une quelconque relecture de Black Sabbath mais vise plutôt le spectre le plus Punky/Métallique du spectre de ce genre.
Une production rude et sans fioritures sert parfaitement le propos de ce groupe qui ne cherche pas à faire dans la séduction facile mais plutôt a rester fidèle a une certaine idée d'un Metal underground loin des ficelles faciles du showbiz. Le groupe ayant eu l'intelligence, comme je le disais en intro, de construire ses titres d'une façon assez proche d'un groupe de Rock (rock très lourd quand même !) les chansons s'enfilent comme des perles et jamais o grand jamais le spectre de l'ennui ou du sentiment de répétition ne s'installe. Ce qui était finalement un grand test pour eux était de voir ce qu'ils allaient donner sur la longueur d'un album (ils n'avaient jusque là sorti qu'un EP et participé à des splits) et l'on est plus que rassuré : on en redemande. Cet album a beau être les deux pieds dans l'under, il n'en n'est pas moins d'une écoute agréable. Le chant déclamé et solennel accroche l'auditeur pour ne plus jamais le lâcher, tandis que les riffs nous hantent bien après l'écoute de l'album. J'ai beau ne pas parler un traître mot de polonais, je trouve que cette belle langue est extrêmement musicale, et se fond parfaitement dans les ténèbres de ce Doom Metal du meilleur acabit.
Bref, vous l'aurez compris, le Scribe recommande chaudement l'acquisition de ce disque absolument délicieux, que vous soyez un(e) grand(e) fan de Doom ou de Metal underground en général, laissez vous séduire !

Well anchored in the underground, our eastern gang gratifies us with a Doom Metal album focused on occultism and quite typical of the eastern scene, with that almost Rock touch that characterizes them.
The cursed convent and its Slavic charm (the Polish lyrics solemnly declaimed) gives us eight heavy and obscure tracks, with a subtle Black Metal touch distilled at key moments. It's nevertheless in the Doom that the band evolves, and a Doom that has little to do with the Stoner or any rereading of Black Sabbath but rather aims at the most Punky/Metallic spectrum of the genre.
A rough and unadorned production perfectly serves the purpose of this band that doesn't try to seduce easily but rather to remain faithful to a certain idea of underground Metal far from the easy strings of showbiz. The band having had the intelligence, as I said in the intro, to build their songs in a way quite close to a Rock band (very heavy rock though!) the songs are strung like pearls and never o ever the spectre of boredom or the feeling of repetition sets in. What was finally a great test for them was to see what they would give on the length of an album (they had only released one EP so far and participated in splits) and we're more than reassured: we're asking for more. Even if this album is a bit of an underdog, it's still a pleasant listening. The declaimed and solemn vocals catch the listener's attention and never let go, while the riffs haunt us long after listening to the album. Even if I don't speak a word of Polish, I find that this beautiful language is extremely musical, and blends perfectly into the darkness of the best Doom Metal.
In short, as you will have understood, the Scribe warmly recommends the acquisition of this absolutely delicious record, whether you are a great fan of Doom or of underground Metal in general, let yourself be seduced!
