Entretien avec Maximilien...été 2020...

Nous découvrîmes les seigneurs de Ba'a lors de leur passage sur le microsillon réunissant Verfallen, Hyrgal et nos gentilshommes en 2018 chez le saint éditeur LADLO. Aujourd'hui entrés en mission chez Osmose, nos nouveaux templiers viennent défendre la foi réelle avec un album qui, pour votre humble Scribe, sera un des joyaux de cette année métallique. Puissant, aventureux, doté d'un souffle rare et d'une personnalité énorme, Ba'a fait partie des derniers représentants d"un black metal qui ne se contente pas de refaire ce qui a tellement été bien fait par le passé. Ces messires ont des choses à dire, et à faire entendre...Voici leur voix, dans les mots de Maximilien, guitariste et bassiste de la formation...

Bonjour Ba'a ! vous le dites vous même, vous allez à l'encontre des dogmes du Black Metal, alors pouvez vous nous présenter la « philosophie » qui anime le groupe, son « message » ?

Il n’y a pas vraiment de message. C’est plus une vision, une approche du monde qui se veut holistique. J’entends par là qu’elle englobe le plan terrestre et le plan spirituel ; ces deux plans fonctionnant comme un tout.

Vous vous appuyez beaucoup sur la bible pour vos thématiques, sans jamais céder à un satanisme antichrétien de pacotille, bien au contraire. Peut on penser que Ba'a témoigne d'un certain respect vis à vis du christianisme, du catholicisme ? Ou est ce uniquement une inspiration textuelle ? 

C’est les deux. Mais nous remettons aussi le catholicisme, et la religion en général, en question. Tout n’est pas blanc ou noir. C’est l’idée principale du Deus Qui Non Mentitur : confronter la religion aux textes saints ; à la parole de Dieu. Il faut comprendre que nous attachons une grande importance à la distinction entre foi et religion. La foi c’est le fait de croire en une ou des forces supérieures qui régissent le monde et de vivre en accord avec leurs préceptes. La religion est l’organisation bureaucratique de cette foi par les humains ; elle est donc régie par ces derniers et c’est bien là que les problèmes commencent. Mais elle a le mérite d’entretenir la mémoire et c’est surtout cela qui nous intéresse.   

Votre album Deus Qui Non Mentirur  est, n'ayons pas peur des mots, un véritable chef d'oeuvre. Comment avez vous accouché d'un monstre pareil ? On y entend du BM des 90's, mais aussi quelque chose de très moderne, unique...

Lors de la composition le but était avant tout de se faire plaisir et de jouer une musique qui nous parle. On voulait que ce soit catchy et faire la part belle aux ambiances. Mais tout cela s’est relativement fait tout seul, l’écriture est restée très instinctive. Par contre, on s’est fait le forcing de composer les morceaux dans l’ordre, tel qu’ils apparaissent sur l’album.

On n’a pas voulu composer des titres comme ça pour ensuite les placer dans l’ordre qui nous paraîtrait le plus adéquat. Le but était vraiment de créer une sorte de fresque musicale.

Dans le morceau « Procession » qui, pour moi, est le diamant ultime de l'album, on entend un extrait du Jesus de Nazareth de Franco Zeffirelli. Faites vous partie de ceux qui, comme moi, admirent Jésus et son message unique et avant-gardiste, tout en déplorant ce que les hommes en ont fait ? Pourquoi, selon vous, les hommes ont ils toujours besoin de salir, de baigner dans le sang des idées d'amour, de paix, de beauté ?

C’est très vaste comme question. Et ça dépend de plein de choses. Parce que franchement un amour déraisonné qui conduit à un humanisme mortifère non merci ! Le plus important c’est d’être juste et de penser par soi-même. Pour moi il est là le message du Christ. A travers ses scènes de vie, ses sermons et ses paraboles il invite les gens à réfléchir sur eux-mêmes, à se remettre en question pour s’améliorer et agir de la manière la plus juste. Et pour être juste il faut ni être dans un amour aveugle ni dans la haine. Par contre oui la miséricorde est l’attribut du juste. Mais du coup c’est sur que quand un curé, sensé répandre la parole du Christ, se fait choper pour pédophilie c’est toute la team qui prend. Les gens ne cherchent pas à comprendre. Ils parlent sans savoir et mettent tout et tout le monde dans le même sac. Au final tu te retrouves avec un Jesus responsable de moult atrocités parce que des personnes arborant des croix font de la merde. Tu peux porter la soutane, bouffer de l’hostie tous les jours et être un pur sataniste.  

Parfois j'ai pensé à l'écoute au sublime dernier album de Glaciation, et pas seulement à cause du chant de Hreidmarr. Comme eux, vous innovez dans un mouchoir de poche, c'est à dire en restant dans les clous du BM mais en le faisant vôtre. Qu'en pensez-vous ? Selon vous y'a t'il d'autres groupes actuels qui réussissent un pari aussi compliqué ?

Je te rejoins totalement sur le côté novateur de Glaciation, par contre c’est toujours très difficile d’avoir un avis sur sa propre production. Nous on essaye de faire notre musique, de proposer notre univers. Après c’est aux auditeurs de juger si on est un énième groupe de black metal qui sert à rien ou pas. Mais je pense qu’on a quelque chose d’intéressant à proposer, sinon on ne le ferait pas. Faire du black pour faire du black c’est le meilleur moyen d’être chiant et ce n’est pas ce que l’on veut.

La comme ça en groupes actuels qui arrivent à innover, j’ai pas dix mille groupes qui me viennent en tête ; mais je citerai Furia, le Furia polonais, je trouve qu’ils ont vraiment apporté leur truc.

Il y a un son très français chez vous, quelque chose qu'on ne peut pas trouver chez un groupe scandinave ou d'ailleurs, et ce n'est pas uniquement le chant en français. Voyez vous ce que je veux dire ?

C’est quelque chose qui revient très souvent dans les retours sur l’album. Alors personnellement je ne m’en rends pas compte. Mais les gens décrivent notre musique comme aristocratique, romantique, même sensuelle. Ces qualificatifs collent bien avec une imagerie très française, en tout cas moi ça me renvoie à des groupes comme Forbidden Site ou Anorexia Nervosa. 

Qui sont les groupes qui peuvent être considérés comme des influences pour Ba'a ? Ou pour ses membres ?

Des influences il y en a pas mal, bien qu’elles soient indirectes. Les groupes qui nous parlent le plus c’est les groupes de black norvégiens du début des 90’s. Mais quand je compose je n’écoute pas trop de black généralement, plutôt du classique contemporain, des trucs comme Debussy, Gorecki, Stravinsky et de la musique « populaire » des 70’s et 80’s.

Comment voyez vous la scène BM contemporaine ? Pensez vous que ce soit une bonne période ? Y'a t'il des groupes qui vous semblent apporter quelque chose de plus ?

Disons que l’age d’or du black c’était les 90’s et que depuis il y a quelques pépites qui sortent par ci par là ; et quand même pas mal de bons groupes. Par contre la quantité de groupes useless est exponentielle. Sur Youtube c’est effrayant. Mais dans le tas on y trouve quand même des trucs supers. En ce moment je suis très attentif à la scène hollandaise que je trouve géniale, avec des groupes comme Turia, Fluisteraars, Iskandr, Solar Temple et Faceless Entity. 

Si Ba'a était une citation, un proverbe ?

En dehors de la bible, y'a t'il des ouvrages, des lectures, qui ont joué un rôle pour cet album ? Et que lisez vous vous même en général ?

On ne peut pas vraiment parler de lecture mais on s’est aussi servi de la légende amérindienne de l’Oiseau Tonnerre. Elle colle parfaitement à la thématique de l’album. Pour ce qui est de nos lectures personnelles pour ma part c’est un peu du grand n’importe quoi du coup je ne vais pas m’étendre sur le sujet. Je sais que Hreidmarr aime bien des auteurs comme Mishima, Roger Nimier, Dantec et Crowley entre autres  

La suite pour Ba'a ? Vous travaillez déjà sur un nouvel album ? Des concerts sont ils prévus après cette merde de covid ?

Oui en effet, la composition du prochain album est déjà bien avancée. Par contre il n’est pas question de concerts pour le moment.

Powerful, adventurous, blessed with a rare breath of air and a huge personality, Ba'a is one of the last representatives of a black metal that doesn't content itself with redoing what has been so well done in the past.These messires have things to say, and things to make heard... Hello Ba'a! You say it yourself, you go against the dogmas of Black Metal, so can you present us the "philosophy" that animates the band, its "message"?

There's not really a message. It's more a vision, an approach to the world that is holistic. By that I mean that it encompasses the earthly and the spiritual plane; these two planes working as a whole.

You rely a lot on the Bible for your themes, without ever yielding to junk anti-Christian Satanism, quite the contrary. Can one think that Ba'a shows a certain respect for Christianity, for Catholicism? Or is it only a textual inspiration? 

It's both. But we also question Catholicism, and religion in general. Not everything is black or white. This is the main idea of the Two Who Do Not Lie: confronting religion with the holy texts; with the word of God. It must be understood that we attach great importance to the distinction between faith and religion. Faith is the fact of believing in one or more higher forces that govern the world and living according to their precepts. Religion is the bureaucratic organization of this faith by humans; it is therefore governed by them and that is where the problems begin. But it has the merit of keeping the memory alive, and that is what interests us most of all.

Your album Deus Qui Non Mentirur is, let's not be afraid of words, a true masterpiece. How did you give birth to such a monster? You can hear BM from the 90's, but also something very modern, unique...

During the composition the goal was above all to have fun and to play a music that speaks to us. We wanted it to be catchy and to make the most of the atmosphere. But all this was relatively done by itself, the writing remained very instinctive. On the other hand, we were forced to compose the songs in order, as they appear on the album.

We didn't want to compose songs like that and then put them in the order that we thought would be the most appropriate. The goal was really to create a kind of musical fresco.

In the song "Procession", which for me is the ultimate diamond of the album, we hear an excerpt from Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth. Are you one of those who, like me, admire Jesus and his unique and avant-garde message, while lamenting what men have done with it? Why, in your opinion, do men always need to dirty, to bathe in the blood of ideas of love, peace, beauty?

That's a very broad question. And it depends on many things. Because, frankly, unreasoned love that leads to a deadly humanism, no thank you! The most important thing is to be just and to think for yourself. For me this is the message of Christ. Through his life scenes, sermons and parables he invites people to reflect on themselves, to question themselves in order to improve themselves and act in the most just way. And to be just one must neither be in blind love nor in hatred. On the other hand yes, mercy is the attribute of the just. But of course, when a priest, who is supposed to spread the word of Christ, is caught for pedophilia, it is the whole team that takes the blame. People don't try to understand. They speak without knowing and put everything and everyone in the same bag. In the end you end up with a Jesus who is responsible for many atrocities because people with crosses make shit. You can wear the cassock, eat host every day and be a pure Satanist.  

Sometimes I thought about listening to the sublime last album of Glaciation, and not just because of Hreidmarr's singing. Like them, you innovate in a pocket handkerchief, that is to say by staying in the BM's studs but making it your own. What do you think about it? According to you, are there other bands today that succeed in such a complicated bet ?

I totally agree with you on the innovative side of Glaciation, on the other hand it's always very difficult to have an opinion on one's own production. We try to make our own music, to propose our own universe. After that it's up to the listeners to judge if we're just another black metal band that's useless or not. But I think we have something interesting to propose, otherwise we wouldn't do it. Doing black to do black is the best way to be boring and that's not what we want.

With the current groups that are able to innovate, I don't have ten thousand groups that come to mind; but I'll quote Furia, the Polish Furia, I think they really brought their thing.

There's a very French sound to you, something you can't find in a Scandinavian band or anywhere else, and it's not just the singing in French. Do you know what I mean?

It's something that comes up very often in the feedback on the album. So personally I don't realize it. But people describe our music as aristocratic, romantic, even sensual. These qualifiers fit well with a very French imagery, at least for me it reminds me of bands like Forbidden Site or Anorexia Nervosa. 

Who are the bands that can be considered as influences for Ba'a ? Or for its members?

There are quite a few influences, although they are indirect. The bands that speak to us the most are the black Norwegian bands of the early 90's. But when I'm composing I don't listen to too much black music generally, more contemporary classical, stuff like Debussy, Gorecki, Stravinsky and "popular" music from the 70's and 80's.

How do you see the contemporary BM scene ? Do you think it's a good period ? Are there any bands that you think bring something more to the scene ?

Let's say that the golden age of black music was the 90's and since then there have been a few nuggets coming out here and there, and still a lot of good bands. On the other hand the quantity of useless bands is exponential. On Youtube it's scary. But in the heap we still find great stuff. At the moment I'm very attentive to the Dutch scene which I think is great, with bands like Turia, Fluisteraars, Iskandr, Solar Temple and Faceless Entity. 

If Ba'a was a quote, a proverb?

Apart from the Bible, are there any books, readings, that played a role in this album? And what do you read yourself in general?

We can't really talk about reading, but we also used the Native American legend of the Thunderbird. It fits perfectly with the theme of the album. As far as our personal readings are concerned, it's a bit of a nonsense, so I won't go into detail on the subject. I know that Hreidmarr likes authors like Mishima, Roger Nimier, Dantec and Crowley among others.  

What's next for Ba'a? Are you already working on a new album? Are there any gigs planned after this covid shit?

Yes indeed, the composition of the next album is already well advanced. But there is no question of concerts for the moment.
