Instrumental Post Metal Ambient Doom ! Voici comment Maudits classent eux-mêmes leur musique ! En lisant cela, je n'avais pas encore écouté ce premier album au titre éponyme. Voici ce que ce voyage musical m'a apporté...
D'emblée, le charme instrumental opère, et, dès les premières secondes, la dimension narrative et cinématographique de la musique du groupe vous embarque sans vous demander votre avis. L'absence de chant ici peut s'apparenter à l'expérience d'un livre sans images, où l'imaginaire personnel fonctionne a fond. Ainsi, chacun se fera sa propre expérience de ce trip musical savoureux que propose Maudits. Nous allons vois maintenant si nous arrivons a cocher toutes les cases du style décrit par le groupe pour nous aiguiller :
1) Post metal
De longues plages oscillant entre lumière planante et obscurité inquiétante, comme un climat contrarié, extrêmement narratif. Oui, nous sommes bien en présence d'une entité post metal tant dès l'introductif "Maudit" (sublime !) s'agrègent arpèges mélodiques en son clair, violon mélancolique, et plombages de guitares venant sanctionner l'ensemble...Ok, post metal, checked !
2) Ambient
La réponse est dans la question. comme je l'ai dit plusieurs fois, l'aspect planant, cinématique, de la musique du groupe les rapproche bien entendu d'un aspect "ambient", tant leur son se fait atmosphérique. Ok, ambient, checked !
3) Doom
Facile ! des guitares torturées et plombées, un batteur à l'aise dans le tempo le plus lent tout en martyrisant ses peaux, une ambiance lugubre et romantique a la fois, façon roméo & juliette au cimetière ? Oui ! doom, checked !
Seulement voila : les étiquettes sont bonnes a vendre de la marchandise, mais elles valent ce qu'elles valent, et sont souvent très limitantes. La musique de Maudits vaut mieux que les étiquettes car il s'agit d'une expérience physique et spirituelle de haut vol. C'est rare, dès le premier titre, j'ai été happé dans un univers conçu par le groupe pour faire voyager l'auditeur, avec des instrumentistes de très haut niveau mais jamais démonstratifs, car toujours au service de la narration musicale. On pense parfois a l'Anathema de la grande époque (Alternative 4 & Judgement) pour cette mélancolie sourde, a la fois délicate et puissante.
Je ne vais pas y aller par quatre chemins : ce Maudits est une des perles de cette année musicale en matière de post metal instrumental, envoyant le trio instrumental directement dans la stratosphère majeure des grands groupes ! Une vraie révélation !

Instrumental Post Metal Ambient Doom! This is how Maudits classify their music themselves! While reading this, I hadn't yet listened to this first album with the eponymous title. Here is what this musical journey brought me...
Right away, the instrumental charm works, and, from the first seconds, the narrative and cinematographic dimension of the band's music takes you on board without asking your opinion. The absence of singing here can be similar to the experience of a book without images, where the personal imagination works at full speed. Thus, everyone will have their own experience of this tasty musical trip proposed by Maudits. We will now see if we can check all the boxes of the style described by the group to guide us:
1) Post metal
Long ranges oscillating between hovering light and disturbing darkness, like a thwarted climate, extremely narrative. Yes, we are indeed in the presence of a post metal entity so much from the introductive "Maudit" (sublime !) are aggregated melodic arpeggios in clear sound, melancholic violin, and guitar fillings coming to sanction the whole...Ok, post metal, checked !
2) Ambient
The answer is in the question. As I have said several times, the floating, cinematic aspect of the band's music brings them closer to an "ambient" aspect, as their sound is so atmospheric. Ok, ambient, checked !
3) Doom
Easy! Tortured and leaded guitars, a drummer at ease in the slowest tempo while martyring his skins, a gloomy and romantic atmosphere at the same time, romeo & juliette style at the cemetery? Yes! doom, checked!
But here's the thing: labels are good for selling merchandise, but they are worth what they are worth, and are often very limiting. The music of Maudits is better than labels because it is a high-flying physical and spiritual experience. It's rare, from the very first track, I was drawn into a universe designed by the band to take the listener on a journey, with instrumentalists of very high level but never demonstrative, because always at the service of musical narration. We sometimes think of the Anathema of the great era (Alternative 4 & Judgement) for this deaf melancholy, both delicate and powerful.
I'm not going to beat about the bush: Maudits (Cursed, in English) is one of the pearls of this musical year in terms of instrumental post metal, sending the instrumental trio directly into the major stratosphere of the great bands! A real revelation!
