Ah que c'est bon de mettre la tête la première dans le thrash old school crasseux et ténébreux de Zoldier Noiz ! Les sudistes viennent de nous mettre une claque mémorable avec leur album "Merci", quelque part entre le premier Voivod, Autopsy, Discharge et tout un tas de trucs crades comme il faut...Explications avec le groupe, où l'on cause musique, confinement et bien entendu laideur infinie de l'humanité !

Salutations Zoldier Noiz et bienvenue dans le Scribe, pouvez vous vous présenter à nos lecteurs qui ne vous connaîtraient pas encore ?

Salut Pierre.

Eh bien pour commencer je serai le seul à répondre à cette interview, les deux autres membres présents sur le disque ont choisi de s'écarter du groupe suite au confinement. C'est presque une habitude, puisque je suis le seul membre permanent depuis 20 ans. On peut dire que le soldat bruit quelque part c'est moi.

Cette entité a balbutié sur Montpellier entre 1999 et 2006 avant de vraiment prendre forme. On jouait à l'époque un mélange entre Blasphemy et « Scum » de Napalm Death. ZOIZ a trouvé sa voie avec la démo « Straight Down To Hell » sortie en 2007 chez (R.I.P) DUKE. Le style est resté le même depuis malgré les innombrables changements de line-up.

« Merci » est le troisième disque de ZOIZ à ce jour. Dans la lignée de Voivod, Repulsion, Carnivore, Autopsy entre autres.

J'ai quitté la Méditerranée il y a trois ans pour les Pyrénées, le groupe est à présent basé à Lourdes.

Le thrash est revenu a la mode depuis une dizaine d'années, ce qui ne peut que réjouir un quasi-quinqua comme moi qui a grandi avec ça mais il y a thrash et thrash ! Zoldier Noiz m'a retourné parce que vous pratiquez ce genre de thrash bien cru et punk que peut aussi jouer Toxic Holocaust (avec qui vous êtes liés par le biais de Joel Grind, n'est il pas?) Vous vous inscrivez dans les pas de Discharge, les premiers Nuclear Assault, SOD, Broken Bones, que du lourd bien violent ! Comment en êtes vous a vénérer cette musique vénère ?

Alors le thrash est peut être revenu à la mode aux USA et en Allemagne, mais vu comme ça reste compliqué de trouver de musiciens motivés ça ne doit pas être le cas en France (rires...).

Toxic Holocaust a commencé en 99, en même temps que nous en fait, je m'étais senti moins seul quand c'est sorti d'ailleurs (rires...)Bien plus tard j'ai envoyé à Joel le mix de notre précédent 4 titres « Earth Lethal Zone » . J'avais vu qu'il proposait des mastering à un prix intéressant. Personne ne voulait sortir ce disque au départ, je m'étais dit que ça ferait un peu de pub. Il n'a pas pu faire de miracle tellement cet enregistrement est chaotique. Cette k7 est condamnée à rester dans l'ombre. Pourtant c'est le line-up avec lequel j'ai le plus tourné (rires...)

Pour le reste j'ai commencé Avec Maiden et Motorhead comme tout le monde je crois...

Mon goût pour le thrash est venu assez tard en fait. Quand j'ai découvert le metal extrème en 92, c'était l'explosion du Death Metal. Les compil Master Of Brutality, les pochettes ultra bourrines et compagnie.... Et si tu veux, pour moi qui avait 12 ans, Slayer et Kreator à côté c'était un peu léger (rires...) Derrière ça, t'as le Black metal qui a débarqué avec Satan, les drakkars, les meurtres, les incendies d'églises... c'était dément comme période....

Très vite ces styles se sont fait bouffer par les labels, la presse, l'égo... Avec des groupes comme Aura Noir ou Destroyer 666 je suis revenu vers des bases solides. J'ai pu redécouvrir la scène des années 80. Je rappelle que sans internet, ces disques n'étaient pas évidents à se procurer.

En parallèle, Montpellier, la ville où j'ai vécu 37 ans, est historiquement la ville du Punk (Les Shériffs, Oth...) et du Hardcore via la Secret Place. Ça jouait tout le temps, du coup j'ai toujours baigné dans ces concerts à l'arrache... et les gens qui vont avec... Bon j'ai gardé le côté « DIY » mais pas « Che Guevara » … j'avoue (rires...) J'étais plus cuir et croix de fer que casquette et baskets. Ça passait pas toujours d'ailleurs.

Votre album s'intitule « merci » et j'ai beaucoup aimé la photo qui accompagne le titre dans la pochette intérieure ! Merci qui ? Hiroshima ? Le Covid-19 ? Le futur holocauste ?

Il s'agit d'une image, évidemment. Pour des gens qui ont vécu une guerre et des bombardements, cela peut sembler ridicule et irrespectueux peut être.

Je pense qu'une grande partie de l'humanité supplie d'être libérée, soulagée d'un mode de vie en totale contradiction avec ses racines et son for intérieur. Tu peux aussi voir ça comme le caprice d'un occidental surprotégé, qui n'a jamais vécu de vraies expériences autrement qu'à travers son écran ou un boulot humiliant pour certains (rires...)

Je pense que même ceux qui refoulent la vérité , au fond, savent que la marche vers la gouvernance globale ne s'enraillera pas avec des manifs et des pétitions, mais bien par un bain de sanquette.

Toujours sur l'album, je m'éclate a écouter le cd en boucle car je n'ai pas ressenti ça depuis longtemps avec un skeud de thrash ! J'ai l'impression d'être en 86/88 quand je me prenais dans la gueule les groupes cités en question 2 et aussi les prémices du grind avec Napalm Death, du crust avec Extreme Noise Terror ou Unseen Terror ! Ca vous étonne ?

Je suis très fier de ce disque donc je dirais non (rires...) mais merci pour le compliment en tout cas.

J'ai juste un soucis avec l'appellation Crust qui est une scène bien à part à laquelle je n'ai jamais appartenu. Les deux membres du 4 titres précédent étaient dedans, ça m'a permis de faire beaucoup de live et de connaître ce milieu avec lequel j'ai au final peu d'affinités, hors musicales. A part Discharge, Black Uniforms, Amebix et deux trois autres... t'as vite fait le tour je trouve.

Par contre si tu es chauffeur poids lourd et que notre disque te motive pour déboucher le périph avec ton 30 tonnes c'est qu' on a réussi le coup.

Finalement, vu l'année de merde que nous traversons, et plus généralement la période, le thrash/punk old school est la meilleure BO possible, non ?

Mon fils, lui, c'est plutôt Bauhaus ou Christian Death, tu vois, ça dépend des gens en fait. Il y en a des plus sensibles, pour qui le climat actuel est complètement anxiogène.

Là où je vais ressentir une excitation à contempler un truc que je sens venir depuis des lustres, alors que tout le monde se foutait de ma gueule, d'autres vont se plonger dans l'anxiété, la dépression et retourner cette colère contre eux ou sur leur entourage.

Regarde mes zikos, ils n'ont pas touché leur instrument pendant 6 mois, ils ne voulaient pas faire une tournée devant des gens assis avec des masques, moi j'ai écrit 10 morceaux et je n'attendais que ça de partir...

On a tous notre réalité et des ressentis différents. Tant pis, c'est la vie et il faut préserver ça justement. J’exècre l'uniformisation qu'on essaye de nous imposer.

Pas de concerts en ce moment, vous en profitez pour bosser de nouvelles compos ? A quoi peut on s'attendre pour la suite ?

J'ai du annuler la tournée avec Violentor et Hateful Agony faute de musiciens. Le Mormoros Fest à Lyon est reporté à l'année prochaine également.

J'ai un nouveau line-up en préparation et deux nouveaux morceaux finis.

J'ai d'autres projets à côté également.

Mais pour l'instant je réfléchis à une setlist live homogène qui permette de rejouer d' anciens morceaux.

Je ne peut rien dire de plus étant donné la situation complètement incertaine du monde du spectacle.

Ça sent les concerts clandestins et les groupes électrogènes. Mais aussi les amendes et confiscations de matos qui vont avec...

Le truc qui vous fait le plus chier en ce moment ?

Le truc qui me fait le plus chier en ce moment c'est évidement de ne pas pouvoir jouer live ni d'aller à des concerts. Ce soir j'aurais du être sur scène au Mondo Bizarro à Rennes, on a jamais pu jouer là bas alors que j'adore cette putain de région. Niveau metal c'est un peu là que ça se passe depuis un moment.

Cette « épidémie » et ses à côté n'ont pas vraiment impacté mon quotidien. J'ai choisi la montagne pour des raisons de cœur mais en quittant la ville, je savais aussi que je m'épargnerais ce genre de scénario catastrophe. Par contre attendez un peu que l'état ne puisse plus assurer les minima sociaux, ça va être une autre histoire que le Covid...

Après via le taf, c'est flippant de voir les dégâts occasionnés par la propagande médiatique et culturelle ambiante. A croire que le flicage de la pensée est tel, que le degrès de soumission des gens et la trouille d'ouvrir leur gueule ont atteint des niveaux jamais vus depuis Vichy. Pourtant on n'a pas Adolf Hitler qui hurle dans un haut parleur, juste des animateurs télé incultes, laids, sans talent, un président cocaïnomane et homosexuel qui a épousé sa mère ...c'est assez curieux.... C'est pas la vision que je me faisais du mâle alpha reproducteur.

Je sais que vous êtes des gros fans de Voivod...sinon qui sont les groupes les plus importants pour vous ?

Je t'ai donné dans une réponse précédente une liste qui comprenait des classiques du metal extrème, mais j'écoute tellement de trucs à côté que je suis incapable de répondre. Il faudrait lister des groupes dans chaque style.

J'ai eu une éducation classique avec conservatoire et tout le bordel, j'adore Wagner, Bach, Tchaikovski.... Popol Vuh, Magma, Hawkwind, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Cure, Dead Can Dance, Der Blutharsh, Death In June (dont on fait une reprise sur « Merci »), The Ramones, Skrewdriver...Ah oui je suis cinéphile aussi, du coup tu peux rajouter d'innombrables bandes originales (rires...) bref on en reparle autour d'un verre plutôt ?

Mission covid-19 : vous devez sortir ce monde de la merde et trouver une solution pour qu'on vive un peu mieux : vous faites quoi ?

Alors je ressemble peut être à Jesus mais lui et moi on fait pas le même boulot. Je n'ai pas assez foi en l'humanité pour vouloir la sauver. Il y a ce qu'il faudrait faire et ce que j'ai envie réellement.

Là je parle au bon sens, à l'instinct. Si je m'en tiens à notre culture et notre mode de vie, le plus logique pour leur survie serait carrément d'intégrer la Russie avec qui on a encore un socle commun, quitte à y laisser des plumes. L'Europe seule a perdu sa force à tous les niveaux. L'avenir n'est plus à l'Ouest, les USA sont mourants, au bord de l'explosion et nous entraînent dans leur chute. Il nous reste quoi sinon ? Les monarchies pétrolières islamiques, comme dans le bouquin de Houellebecq là..... ah oui, y'a Israël aussi (rires...) Bon maintenant je t'avoue qu'à mon humble niveau, je m'occupe de ma famille, la baraque, la zik, les amis, pour l'humanité on verra plus tard.

Une chose est sure, l'homme moderne par son arrogance naturelle à besoin de craindre une puissance au dessus de lui afin de réguler ses ardeurs. Le dieu argent étant en train de s'effriter via la planche à billets, il va chercher une vrai spiritualité. Maintenant on attend la suite.

La question « technique » pour Tankvinss : comment entretiens-tu ta voix ? Au papier de verre ? Putain, Lemmy a côté on dirait un castrat (rires gras du scribe)

Alors ça c'est tout con, quand j'étais gosse, je rêvais d'avoir la voix du doublage français de Sylvester Stallone. Je m’entraînais en jouant à la guerre ou autres. Bref, en grandissant j'ai compris, bien sur, que personne ne parlait comme ça. Il a fallu trouver une sorte de compromis... et oui ...ne jamais abandonner ses rêves (rires...)

The southerners have just given us a memorable slap with their album "Merci", somewhere between the first Voivod, Autopsy, Discharge and a whole bunch of dirty stuff as it should be...Explanations with the band, where we talk about music, confinement and of course the infinite ugliness of humanity!

 

Greetings Zoldier Noiz and welcome to the Scribe, can you introduce yourself to our readers who may not know you yet?

Hello Pierre.

Well to begin with I will be the only one to answer this interview, the two other members present on the record have chosen to leave the band due to confinement. It's almost a habit, since I'm the only permanent member for 20 years. You could say that the soldier who is making a noise somewhere is me.

This entity was in its infancy in Montpellier between 1999 and 2006 before really taking shape. At the time, we played a mix between Blasphemy and "Scum" from Napalm Death. ZOIZ found his way with the demo "Straight Down To Hell" released in 2007 by (R.I.P) DUKE. The style has remained the same since then despite the countless line up changes.

"Thank you" is ZOIZ's third album to date. In the lineage of Voivod, Repulsion, Carnivore, Autopsy among others.

I left the Mediterranean three years ago for the Pyrenees, the band is now based in Lourdes.

Thrash has come back in the last ten years or so, which can only delight a quasi-quinqua like me who grew up with it but there is thrash and thrash! Zoldier Noiz turned me around because you practice this kind of raw and punk thrash that Toxic Holocaust can also play (with whom you're linked through Joel Grind, isn't he?) You follow in the footsteps of Discharge, the first Nuclear Assault, SOD, Broken Bones, only heavy and violent stuff! How did you come to worship this venerated music?

Thrash may have come back into fashion in the USA and in Germany, but seeing how complicated it is to find motivated musicians, it must not be the case in France (laughs...).

Toxic Holocaust started in 99, at the same time as us in fact, I felt less lonely when it came out (laughs...) Much later I sent Joel the mix of our previous 4 tracks " Earth Lethal Zone " . I had seen that he was offering mastering at an interesting price. Nobody wanted to release this record at first, I thought it would be a bit of a publicity stunt. He couldn't make a miracle because this recording is so chaotic. This tape is doomed to remain in the shadows. And yet it's the line up with which I've toured the most (laughs...).

For the rest I started with Maiden and Motorhead like everyone else I think...

My taste for thrash came rather late in fact. When I discovered extreme metal in 92, it was the explosion of Death Metal. The Master Of Brutality compilations, the ultra-buffy covers and so on.... And if you want, for me who was 12 years old, Slayer and Kreator on the side was a little bit light (laughs...) Behind that, you have Black metal that landed with Satan, drakkars, murders, church fires... it was a crazy period....

Very quickly these styles were eaten up by the labels, the press, the ego... With bands like Aura Noir or Destroyer 666 I came back to solid foundations. I was able to rediscover the 80's scene. I remind you that without the internet, these records were not easy to get hold of.

At the same time, Montpellier, the city where I lived for 37 years, is historically the city of Punk (Les Shériffs, Oth...) and Hardcore via the Secret Place. It played all the time, so I was always inundated with these concerts... and the people who go with them... Well, I kept the "DIY" side but not "Che Guevara" ... I confess (laughs...) I was more leather and iron cross than cap and trainers. It didn't always work, by the way.

Your album is entitled "Thank you" and I really liked the photo that accompanies the title in the inside pocket ! Thank you who ? Hiroshima ? The Covid-19 ? The future holocaust ?

It's a picture, of course. For people who have lived through war and bombing, it may seem ridiculous and disrespectful perhaps.

I think that a large part of humanity is begging to be liberated, relieved of a way of life in total contradiction with its roots and its inner self. You can also see it as the whim of an overprotected Westerner, who has never had any real experiences other than through his screen or a humiliating job for some (laughs...).

I think that even those who repress the truth, deep down, know that the march towards global governance will not be enraged by demonstrations and petitions, but by a sandbath.

Still on the album, I'm having fun listening to the cd in loop because I haven't felt that for a long time with a thrash skeud! I have the impression to be in 86/88 when I got caught in the mouth the bands mentioned in question 2 and also the beginnings of the grind with Napalm Death, the crust with Extreme Noise Terror or Unseen Terror ! Does it surprise you ?

I'm very proud of this record so I would say no (laughs...) but thank you for the compliment anyway.

I just have a problem with the name Crust, which is a very different scene to which I've never belonged. The two members of the previous 4 tracks were in it, it allowed me to do a lot of live performances and to know this milieu with which I have little affinity, except for the music. Except Discharge, Black Uniforms, Amebix and two three others... you quickly made the turn I find.

On the other hand, if you are a heavyweight driver and that our record motivates you to unblock the perimeter with your 30 tones, it's because we did it.

Finally, considering the shitty year we're going through, and more generally the period, old school thrash/punk is the best soundtrack possible, isn't it ?

My son is more like Bauhaus or Christian Death, you know, it depends on the people. There are some more sensitive ones, for whom the current climate is completely anxiety-provoking.

Where I'm going to feel excited to contemplate something I've felt coming for ages, while everyone was laughing at me, others will plunge into anxiety, depression and turn this anger against them or their entourage.

Look at my musicians, they didn't touch their instrument for 6 months, they didn't want to go on tour in front of people sitting with masks on, I wrote 10 songs and I was just waiting to leave...

We all have our own reality and different feelings. Too bad, that's life and we have to preserve that. I'm executing the uniformity that they're trying to impose on us.

No concerts at the moment, do you take the opportunity to work on new compositions? What can we expect for the future?

I had to cancel the tour with Violentor and Hateful Agony due to a lack of musicians. The Mormoros Fest in Lyon is postponed to next year as well.

I have a new line up in preparation and two new songs finished.

I have other projects on the side as well.

But for the moment I'm thinking about a homogeneous live setlist that will allow me to play old songs again.

I can't say anything more given the completely uncertain situation in the entertainment world.

It smells like clandestine concerts and electro-generating groups. But also the fines and confiscation of equipment that go with it...

What's your biggest pain in the ass right now?

The thing that pisses me off the most at the moment is obviously not being able to play live or go to concerts. Tonight I should have been on stage at the Mondo Bizarro in Rennes, we've never been able to play there and I love that fucking region. Metal level is a bit where it's been going on for a while.

This "epidemic" and its side effects haven't really impacted my daily life. I chose the mountains for reasons of the heart but when I left the city, I also knew that I would avoid this kind of disaster scenario. On the other hand, wait until the state can no longer provide the minimum social benefits, it's going to be a different story than Covid...

Afterwards, it's frightening to see the damage caused by the media and cultural propaganda. It's as if the thought cops are such a cop, that the degree of submission of people and the fear of opening their mouths have reached levels never seen since Vichy. Yet we don't have Adolf Hitler shouting into a loudspeaker, just a bunch of uncultured, ugly, talentless TV hosts, a cocaine-addicted, homosexual president who married his mother ...it's quite curious.... This is not the vision I had of the breeding alpha male.

I know that you are big fans of Voivod...if not who are the most important bands for you?

I gave you in a previous answer a list that included some extreme metal classics, but I listen to so much stuff on the side that I can't answer. You would have to list bands in each style.

I had a classical education with a conservatory and all the mess, I love Wagner, Bach, Tchaikovsky.... Mission covid-19: you have to get this world out of the shit and find a solution so that we can live a little better: what are you doing?

So I might look like Jesus but he and I don't do the same job. I don't have enough faith in humanity to want to save it. There are things that should be done and what I really want to do.

Now I am talking to common sense, to instinct. If I stick to our culture and our way of life, the most logical way for them to survive would be to integrate Russia, with which we still have a common base, even if it means losing some of our feathers. Europe alone has lost its strength at all levels. The future is no longer in the West, the United States is dying, on the verge of explosion and dragging us down with it. What else do we have left? The Islamic petrine monarchies, like in Houellebeck's book là..... ah yes, there's Israel too (laughs...) Well now I confess that at my humble level, I take care of my family, the hut, the zike, the friends, for humanity we'll see later.

One thing is sure, modern man by his natural arrogance needs to fear a power above him in order to regulate his ardour. The silver god being crumbling through the money board, he will seek a true spirituality. Now we wait for the rest.

The "technical" question for Tankvinss: how do you maintain your voice? With sandpaper? Damn, Lemmy looks like a castrato on the side (fat laughter from the scribe).

So that's stupid, when I was a kid, I dreamed of having the voice of Sylvester Stallone's French dubbing. I used to train by playing war or whatever. Anyway, when I grew up I understood, of course, that nobody spoke like that. You had to find a kind of compromise... and yes ... never give up your dreams (laughs...).
