"Most of our lyrics talk about the human struggles, as individuals and as a civilization, the horrific world we have built and how we have turned our existence into an endless cycle of suffering and opression"
Hello Aversio humanitatis...alas all my readers don't know you yet...at the same time they are very lucky, because they are going to discover you! So, you agree to introduce yourself?
There's no introduction interesting enough to catch your attention with words, so press the play button and listen to what we do immediately, if you like what you hear then continue reading the interview!
You come from Spain, and more precisely from Madrid, which is not the country that produces the most experimental and psychedelic black metal bands...where did this music come from ?
This music comes from pain, hate, frustration, inner reflection, from the longing to transcend the mundane. It doesn't matter what country you come from, these emotions are universal.
I've seen that you are sometimes compared to Mgla, but also to our French geniuses of Blut Aus Nord (great national pride!) and Deathspell Omega...What do you think? Do you think these comparisons make sense?
Sure, why not, all three bands has produced excellent albums that are landmarks of contemporary Black Metal, they have had an impact, to a greater or lesser extent, on many people including my self. What can I say about albums like 'The Mystical Beast of Rebellion', 'Paracletus' or 'Enemy of Man' by Kriegsmaschine... almost perfection. That being said, I think many ignorant people basically assume that those bands invented modern Black Metal, they don't have more references, they don't know the underground, it's a bit absurd and annoying reading the same names on every single review, that doesn't make sense and it's doesn't do justice to many other bands.
In 2011 you released your first album, Abandonment Ritual, which already had a very personal style, between black and death metal, with almost rock and post-punk touches...How did you work on this album and what did it represent for you then...and today ?
The writing of that album was more naive and unpretentious than what we do nowadays, just some 20 years old guys making music. It was written mostly at home, infront a computer, with programmed drums, and then we went to the rehearsal room to record it with basic equipment, it was all pretty straight forward, but the result was very worthy.
Why this nine-year period between the first and the second album ? So, yes, it's true you did a lot of things in between (two split-albums and an Ep) but you wanted to take the time to release this second lp ? What does it represent for you ?
We didn't want to take that much time, it's just how things happened for many reasons... health issues, travels, job instability, all that kind of stupid problems that prevent you from doing what really fulfills your life. We didn't have more options than making short releases during those years, until we finally could work again on a bigger project like 'Behold the Silent Dwellers'. After these 10 years I feel like a whole life has passed, so many things has occured, but we're still the same members in the band, doing the same, but better.
A.M.'s vocals have literally captivated me on this album, I find that it exudes a very strong emotion, and clearly distinguishes itself from all black metal (or even death) standards by vibrating a very inner voice, which at times sent me back to the best Mayhem songs with Attila... Is it a reference for you ? (for me yes!) How did A.M. approach the vocals for this album ?
Wish he could answer himself, but it's not possible right now. I can tell you this time A. worked on the vocals in a more organic and visceral way, he was writting the lyrics and making the arrangements in the rehearsal room while J. and me were composing the music, so I guess it allowed him to flow with the music and find the right tone on the spot, there was no home demos but singing directly over the songs as they were being written. And yes, we're all very happy with the results, the vocals are definitely one of the strong points on the new album, he has been improving his vocal work during the years, instead of flat vocals his interpretations are full of energy and emotion.
Your music remains elusive, and I don't want to pigeonhole it...you can't tame a wild animal. Nevertheless, could you tell us which bands influenced you the most ?
I listen to so many bands that it's hard identify who is influencing my compositions, some safe names to drop could be Plebeian Grandstand, Kriegsmaschine, Blut Aus Nord, Reverence, Blaze of Perdition or Lorn. Of course I could start naming dozens of bands inside and out of Black Metal, but I think those are the most obvious.
The lyrics evoke the fog or the stars and are composed of many evocative images...What did you want to convey through your lyrics ?
Most of our lyrics talk about the human struggles, as individuals and as a civilization, the horrific world we have built and how we have turned our existence into an endless cycle of suffering and opression. On the other side, we also evoke those more cosmic and dreamlike landscapes, I guess in an attempt to free our minds and image what's beyond our understanding and knowledge.
Being horribly old (lol) I have the references of my age...When I listen to you, I do think of metal bands, but also Killing Joke, Christian Death, The Cure...am I normal or am I crazy ?
Honestly, I don't listen that much to The Cure or Killing Joke, but I do listen to other bands that are influenced by them, so who knows, at the end of the day, music is music, it's all related and connected. Extreme metal has its limitations, you can't fit everything in it, but there are some unexpected and camouflaged influences for sure.
How far do you think extreme metal, which became a genre at a respectable age, can still go in terms of innovation ? I mean, when we listen to your album we hear something personal and unique, but many bands are similar to our times, right ?
Hehe, I just said that thing about the limitations when making extreme metal music, but at the same time I think there's always room for innovation. The thing nowadays is that there are too many bands and even labels, it's oversaturated, many unspired and unoriginal people that just choose the easy path to copy what others have done, but also there are always people expanding the limits with their music, that's why Black Metal hasn't died in 30 years, otherwise it would have been forgotten like many other trends. It that sense I guess i'm an optimistic.
If Aversio Humanitatis was a proverb or a quote ?
I guess each member could give you a different quote, but for me it's basically what the name means: to abandon humanity, to leave everything behind.
What are your favorite albums ?
Too many to even think about it, I'll tell you what's my favourite album of this month (it's actually an EP) : Gorrch 'Introvertere', fantastic Italian band.
What do you think about the times we live in? Do you have a solution to get out of it?
I don't know what to think about it, it has so many implications and side effects..., it's quite a big thing and I think many goverments underestimated the situation, now we're going to pay the consequences, the economy is going to collapse.
I leave you the last words: it's up to you to conclude as you wish:
We're planning a private streaming concert the 5th of December, the tickets can be found on our website or on the Debemur Morti webshop, so be sure to be there. Really appreciate your interest for the band...
