Review - Prophetic Scourge - Gnosis - French & Engish Text - Klonosphere - death metal
Lorsque l'on baptise son groupe Prophetic Scourge ("fléau prophétique") et que l'on nomme son deuxième album "Gnosis" (la gnose pouvant être définie comme une version cachée du savoir, une version pour initiés des connaissances cachées dans les textes sacrés ou ésotériques) on n'est pas là à priori pour raconter des histoires rigolotes sur fond de reggae/dub.
En effet, les gars de Nouvelle Aquitaine sont branchés sur l'occulte, l'ésotérique, la magie, le religieux et tout ce qui nous dépasse. Musicalement on a ici affaire à un death metal technique mais point trop démonstratif, mené par la voix d'outre-tombe de Josh Smith, qui peut passer d'un growling grave hyper profond à des screams suraigus en quelques secondes. Au jeu toujours restrictif des comparaisons on pense forcément à Death, en plus moderne. Le groupe plonge dans la mythologie grecque pour nous pondre un album ambitieux, opératique, complet. Les guitares savent trancher ou au contraire dessiner de jolis arabesques, tandis que le batteur/pieuvre Jon Erviti (aussi dans Silent Opera) peut faire parler la poudre en blast-beat supersonique mais également se lancer dans un jeu quasiment jazz. Les titres sont longs mais jamais ennuyeux, tant les gars varient les ambiances et les rythmiques, et l'on se prend au jeu de cet opéra death de toute beauté pour ne plus arriver à en sortir. Le bassiste est un malade mental qui doit avoir vingt doigts à chaque main (pas d'autre explication) ! On est donc tout à la fois impressionné par la maestria des musiciens, l'atmosphère épique qui se dégage du disque, brutalisé, séduit tour à tour.
Avec "Gnosis" Prophetic Scourge frappe trés fort, et nous rappelle que le death metal français traverse une période très faste. Bravo à eux et merci pour ce monstre d'album !

When you name your band Prophetic Scourge and you call your second album Gnosis (gnosis being defined as a hidden version of knowledge, a version for initiates of the knowledge hidden in sacred or esoteric texts), you're not there to tell funny stories on a reggae/dub background.
Indeed, the guys from New Aquitaine are into the occult, the esoteric, magic, religion and everything that goes beyond us. Musically, we're dealing with a technical but not too demonstrative death metal, led by Josh Smith's otherworldly voice, which can go from a very deep growling to high-pitched screams in a few seconds. In the always restrictive game of comparisons, one inevitably thinks of Death, only more modern. The band dives into Greek mythology to produce an ambitious, operatic and complete album. The guitars know how to cut or on the contrary draw nice arabesques, while the drummer/ octopus Jon Erviti (also in Silent Opera) can make the powder speak in supersonic blast-beat but also launch into an almost jazz play. The tracks are long but never boring, as the guys vary the ambiences and the rhythms, and you get caught up in this beautiful death opera and can't get out. The bass player is a mental patient who must have twenty fingers on each hand (no other explanation)! So we are all at once impressed by the musicians' mastery, the epic atmosphere that emanates from the record, brutalized, seduced in turn.
With "Gnosis" Prophetic Scourge hits very hard, and reminds us that French death metal is going through a very good period. Bravo to them and thank you for this monster of an album!
