Hi S., and thanks for answering my questions! Can you start by introducing Owl Cave to our readers?
Hi
Owl Cave is a solo project that was born in late 2017/early 2018. That's when the composition of Broken Speech started, which was finished at the end of 2018. This was followed by the various stages of production of the album itself, which eventually led us to this release on Time Tombs Production this year.
The music deployed on your album Broken Speech is a dark composite of black metal, sludge, post metal, ambient, noise...How did these musical influences come to you, and how did you arrange them?
I've been immersed in the black metal scene (especially the so-called "Parisian" scene) for years, and it was these bands that shaped my taste in extreme music in the beginning. From there I got the dissonance and the black metal side (I was quite influenced by Aosoth in particular). And there was the discovery of Throane, whose opacity and heaviness knocked me out on the spot and is not for nothing in the turn of certain passages.
The layout came about quite intuitively...
It's not always easy to do avant-garde metal, especially in France, the paradox being that we have a lot of excellent bands in this field, but a public that is sometimes a bit conservative. How do you deal with this?
I must admit that this is a question I haven't asked myself much (if at all). I did what I needed to do, I did it for myself first of all, knowing that it would please some people and not at all others...
I agree, there is a richness in this scene in France (as elsewhere), and which finally finds its public I think; it is not a music which aspires to aim at a large public, and which is perhaps more satisfied with a more restricted audience but at the same time more in phase with the music?
Can you tell us about this album, its composition, its realization, in a not easy period? I also want you to tell us about your collaboration with Dehn Sora for the album cover!
The composition, as we mentioned above, was done in 2018, the drums recorded in December of the same year. The rest of the instruments were recorded in 2019, and the mixing could start in October 2019 and was finalized in May 2020. The mastering was done in autumn 2020.
All this to say that the production of the album has hardly been impacted by the health crisis we are going through. However, the same cannot be said for the release itself, because of the long delivery times that have delayed the arrival of the CDs in particular. And yet, I think we didn't do too badly...
To speak about the composition, everything was done in an extremely intuitive way, it came by itself, it was almost a little confusing sometimes... In terms of structure, the songs on the album are almost as they came out at the very beginning. However, there was a lot of work on the sound textures and ambiences to dress them up.
I met Dehn Sora when the composition was not quite finished yet. When it was, I told him about this album, offering to listen to it and, if he liked the project, to make the cover. He also did me the honour of participating with other friends in the recording of the percussion parts (which underline certain passages and constitute the heart of one of the tracks on the album). He's a brilliant artist in any medium and very humble, and it took almost no more than a discussion for him to grasp the visual challenges of this album, with the result that for me is a perfect match.
What is your vision of the metal landscape in France today, both in terms of music and the conditions in which it evolves?
I'm not sure I have a real "vision" of the metal landscape in France... It's clear that there is an evolution compared to 10 or 15 years ago, in the customs as well as in the music itself. Metal in general has become much more democratic and less subversive than it used to be I think. We see bands becoming more professional and being welcomed in better venues and in better conditions for concerts. Some people see it as a loss of the spirit of what it was, others find this evolution to their advantage... which I guess I am. But I'm not sure I have a strong opinion on the matter anyway.
Does Owl Cave have a particular message?
Not really... Making this album was really a personal catharsis, and I didn't want to say anything more than to express emotional states that maybe people who dive into the album will be able to discern (by the way, I didn't want to say anything at all, otherwise I probably would have created some lyrics or texts)
In terms of today's society, how do you see things?
... I don't really know how to answer this question in a concise way, and I imagine that my opinion will be of little interest to the readers... Joker?
Do you plan to give concerts?
Yes, I am! I've put together a line up, and we've started working actively on it. We hope to be able to do our first dates in 2022.
If Owl Cave had to be a quote or a proverb?
"Your silence speaks volumes", a phrase uttered by Windom Earle in Twin Peaks, which opens Broken Speech

A word to the scribe readers?
Thank you for your interest. If you want to get the most out of Broken Speech, listen to it in one go, at a sufficient volume, and do nothing else, just let it sink in...
