Fabio Lipera, musicien sicilien membre des éminents Winged (voir dans le Scribe, vous trouverez plusieurs kros et une interview) sévit ici sous le nom de Black Scorpion, et n'a sorti à ce jour qu'un seul album avec cette entité Avernum Whispers, "Beyond The River Of Laments" sorti en 2013 sur un label italien, Warhell Records, et réédité aujourd'hui par l'excellent label néerlandais The Ritual Productions, partenaire des premiers jours du Scribe...
Si tout n'est pas parfait dans l'interprétation de cet album, Avernum Whispers n'en a pas moins abouti à un album singulier, dans la lignée de ce que les groupes italiens nous proposent depuis les années 90, à savoir un metal grandiloquent, épique, aux profondes influences gothiques, jonglant ici entre doom et black metal, avec des vocaux mixtes (clair et death) assez surprenants. Ce que j'ai toujours aimé dans les groupes italiens c'est cette théâtralité qui remonte au théâtre dans les forums romains. Avernum Whispers, comme ses compatriotes de Cultus Sanguine ou Opera IX fait usages de claviers et d'orgues d'église pour accentuer le côté dark de sa musique. Une fois passé le côté déplaisant d'une batterie programmée assez primitive, on se laisse prendre par l'atmosphère dégagée par le disque, sombre, mélancolique, romantique au sens premier du terme, avec ce sens du tragique inhérent aux latins. Le chant de Fabio en voix claire peut rappeler un Rob Halford en mode "tranquille" tandis que sa voix death est moins signifiante. Il est évident qu'une production moins "démo" aurait sans doute aussi donné à cet album le brillant qu'il méritait, mais au final ce cachet underground lui sied bien, et nous rappelle nombre de méfaits enregistrés dans des conditions spartiates dans les années 90. Il y a vraiment du heavy metal aussi chez Avernum Whispers, au travers de ces phrasés de guitare mélodiques, du chant aussi, mais tout simplement au niveau de l'ambiance générale. Au final on se retrouve avec un objet assez inclassable, regroupant la noirceur d'un certain black metal, la lourdeur et la lenteur du doom et le côté épique du heavy metal. Comme je le disais en intro, les italiens sonnent goth même sans le faire exprès, cela fait partie de leur adn.

Beyond The River Of Laments ravira toutes celles et ceux qui aiment le metal épique et grandiloquent, quasiment pompier, avec beaucoup d'arrangements, et préfèrent la mélodie et l'ambiance à la pure brutalité.

If everything is not perfect in the interpretation of this album, Avernum Whispers has nonetheless produced a singular album, in line with what Italian bands have been offering us since the 90s, namely a grandiloquent, epic metal, with deep gothic influences, juggling here between doom and black metal, with mixed vocals (clear and death) quite surprising. What I've always liked in Italian bands is this theatricality that goes back to the theatre in the Roman forums. Avernum Whispers, like their compatriots Cultus Sanguine or Opera IX, use keyboards and church organs to accentuate the dark side of their music. Once past the unpleasant side of the rather primitive programmed drums, one is taken in by the dark, melancholic, romantic atmosphere of the record, with this sense of tragedy inherent to the Latins. Fabio's clear voice can remind us of a Rob Halford in "quiet" mode, while his death voice is less significant. It's obvious that a less "demo" production would have also given this album the brilliance it deserved, but in the end this underground cachet suits it well, and reminds us of many misdeeds recorded in spartan conditions in the 90s. There is really heavy metal in Avernum Whispers too, through the melodic guitar phrasing, the vocals too, but simply in the general atmosphere. In the end, we find ourselves with a rather unclassifiable object, gathering the darkness of a certain black metal, the heaviness and slowness of doom and the epic side of heavy metal. As I said in the introduction, the Italians sound goth even without doing it on purpose, it's part of their DNA.

Beyond The River Of Laments will delight all those who like epic and grandiloquent metal, almost pompous, with lots of arrangements, and prefer melody and atmosphere to pure brutality.
